Plus, we’re throwing in a free pet nutritional consultation, discounts on new products, and sneak previews on local events.
Call it our New Year’s gift to you, our loyal customers!
Happy 2019! We hope your holidays were festive and healthy, and full of cuddles and play time with your furry best friend.
It’s time to look forward to the year ahead. What adventures will you have? Planning to learn a new skill? How about health and nutrition goals? Whatever you’ve got planned, we know that your companion would love to be a part of your adventure. Why not start the year with a few nutrition and activity goals you can share?
Start with some immediate post-holiday goals. Chances are, you aren’t the only one who overindulged over the past few weeks. Your furry companion could likely use some digestive help, just like you. Our Complete Gut Health is great for cats and dogs and supports normal healthy digestion and features prebiotics and probiotics.
Maybe you need a more thorough resetting of your diet, so use the opportunity of the New Year to commit yourself to improving your overall health. That same commitment works for your dog or cat, too. Just like you know you should cut out the junk food and eat more fruits and veggies, you know that your dog will thrive with a diet consisting of more meat and nutrient rich fruits and veggies, or your cat will thrive on raw cat food which is high in protein, digestive enzymes, amino acids and essential fatty acids.
Once your nutrition goals are set, it’s time to get off the couch and get moving. We know – it’s at the top of everyone’s New Year’s list. But isn’t it more appealing to exercise with your dog, rather than in a gym? Commit to upping your daily walk game – but don’t limit yourself to just walking. Throw in some intervals (walk or run faster for short periods), some games of catch with your dog, or even a set of push-ups. It’s good for you, it breaks up the monotony of the walk and your dog will love time spent with you. And for cats, it’s hard to beat an interactive cat toy!
Lastly, it’s a New Year, so don’t forget to take a moment to be thankful for the beautiful and loving pets who enrich your life every day.
#ONPtoDEN New Store in Denver Joins Boulder, Aspen Locations
Boulder, Colo., October 23, 2018 – Only Natural Pet (www.onlynaturalpet.com), a Boulder, CO-based leader in natural pet products, is expanding its retail presence in its home state of Colorado by opening a third store in Denver, CO, later this week.

The store will feature a new pet grooming offering called “The Groomery,” in partnership with PetSmart. In July 2018, the FDA released a warning about grain-free dog foods and their possible connection to the development of a heart disease in dogs called DCM. Here are a few things you should know:
The FDA’s warning is based on a number of reported cases of dogs that developed DCM whose diet consisted of a grain-free dog food with a large amount of potatoes, legumes, and “exotic” proteins in the ingredients. Vegan and homemade diets were also reportedly involved. This caught FDA’s attention because some of the dogs were not the breeds that commonly develop DCM.
Subsequently, the FDA has emphasized that people should “not take intuitive leaps beyond what is explicitly stated in our public notice.” In other words, don’t think that all grain-free diets with legumes or potatoes are problematic. It is primarily a situation confined to relatively few diets and the evidence linking the diets to DCM is far from conclusive and requires additional study.
The hypothesis is that the diets in question may potentially provide insufficient levels of the essential amino acid taurine, which would in turn contribute to the development of DCM.
Here are the characteristics of the type of diet that would meet the criteria of foods most correlated with DCM in dogs (based on the FDA statement and prior research):
Containing a significant amount of “exotic” animal proteins, such as bison, duck, lamb, kangaroo, salmon, and venison.
It is important to note that based on the information provided by the FDA it most likely takes a combination of multiple factors to create a situation where taurine may not be sufficient.
Many common proteins used in dog food (not “exotic”), such as chicken, turkey, and fish, are generally good sources of taurine.
Raw meat and poultry have higher levels of taurine, as the bioavailability of taurine is reduced by heat processing.
In conclusion, it is important to remember that millions of dogs have been fed grain-free diets for many years with no adverse health consequences, and the FDA warning is based on observations from a comparatively small sample of cases. If you have additional questions about the issue, please consult with your veterinarian.
When you hear the word “biology,” what do you think of? Your junior year in high school? Snorkeling with tropical fishes or taking a walk in the woods? Here at Only Natural Pet, when we hear it, we think of formulating new and exciting varieties of pet foods and treats… because biology is the basis for everything we put our name on.
Here’s a brief look at the process we use to create our pet foods. Once you have a chance to think about it, we think you’ll agree that everyone should follow this kind of rigorous, science-based development process—even if lots of brands don’t.
Your Little Carnivore
It may be hard to believe when they’re snuggled up next to us, but our cats and dogs at home are near-identical genetic matches to decidedly non-snuggly wildcats and wolves. They are true carnivores with digestive systems that are specifically tuned to accommodate (and thrive with) the consumption of raw meat.
Paleo for Pets
The ideal diets for our pets include fresh foods that align with their natural biology—a minimally processed, high-protein diet that resembles the “Paleo” diet followed by some humans.
Only Natural Pet believes that cats and dogs deserve a biologically appropriate diet based on four key rules:
1. Includes as much high-quality animal protein as possible
2. Offers critically needed dietary moisture
3. Contains moderate amounts of healthy animal fats
4. Is minimally processed and as close to raw as possible
If that sounds like like the Paleo diet your Crossfit-crazy neighbor is constantly talking about, you’re right. It just happens to be perfect for pets… because of biology.
The Only Natural Pet Development Process
All of our products follow the same path from idea to development to store.
Carefully examine pets’ biology to determine what their bodies need to thrive
Formulate with our holistic veterinarian, Dr. Jean, to ensure we’re supporting full-body wellness through whole-food nutrition
Carefully select human-grade natural ingredients that are free from contaminants and anything artificial
Create packaging in our hometown of Boulder, Colorado (birthplace of the natural foods movement for humans) with a commitment to transparent marketing
Let’s be honest. Some pet companies don’t follow the same rigorous process. But as an Only Natural Pet customer, you already know that—in fact, that’s probably why you became a customer in the first place.
It’s true that domestic pets can digest biologically inappropriate ingredients like high-glycemic carbohydrates and grains. But the same can be said for that fast-food double cheeseburger we all sneak every once in a while. We can digest them, but we won’t thrive based on the nutrition they provide. Wouldn’t you rather help your pets do more than merely survive?
As an individual, you have lots of choices that have a positive impact on the planet. Buy a hybrid car. Install solar panels on your house. Drink fair trade coffee. Purchase earth-friendly cleaning products. Great ideas! But when you’re in the pet industry, how do you extend socially responsible choices to your business?
This was the question that inspired Only Natural Pet founder Marty Grosjean and two other “big dogs” of the sustainability community, Chris Bentley and Hunter Lovins. These three business leaders shared a vision “that would enable the entire pet industry to engage more positively with the environment and communities where they do business.”
From that vision the Pet Sustainability Coalition (PSC) was created, the pet industry’s leading force for environmental and social responsibility. PSC is a non-profit “business accelerator” that empowers pet-related companies of all sizes to adopt practices that are good for business and good for the planet—including the use of sustainable ingredients and packaging, responsible shipping, community outreach and much more.
PSC’s vital work shows how pet-focused businesses can be a “paws-itive” force for good. Read on to find out how it happens.
Providing the Toolkit
Giving companies what they need to succeed
PSC’s Business Sustainability Toolkit is what makes the magic happen. The Toolkit starts with nuts-and-bolts resources to help pet businesses make themselves more sustainable in areas like supply chain, office efficiency and employee engagement. Then, the Toolkit helps newly earth-friendly businesses talk to like-minded pet owners seeking out the best choices for their furry friends.
Like a four-story cat climbing tree, PSC’s foundation is built upon four core values. Transparency keeps everything out in the open to maintain accountability. Collaboration recognizes the value of collaboration between manufacturers, suppliers, brands and retailers. Authenticity reminds us that sincerity means more than “quick wins.” And Implementation Focused means that action is always better than words when it comes to sustainability.
Our Founding Mission
Sustainable from the start
For Only Natural Pet, earth-friendly practices have always been part of our DNA. Our mission is to support long and healthy lives for your pets by providing truly natural products produced in the most environmentally and socially responsible ways we can. When we see new and existing brands alike join PSC and commit themselves to doing things the right way, it’s only natural that we purr a little bit. As a whole bunch of animals sharing one tiny planet, we’re all in this together.
We are conscious of our actions… and their effects
With a name like ours, it’s only natural that we consider the environment in everything we do—from our supply chain to the paper we buy for the office laser printer. We are determined that every choice we make is the right choice for the planet.
And of course, you are here reading this because (just like us) you’re actively trying to be a part of the solution. From the products you buy to the foods you eat, you’re clawing your way to a more sustainable carbon footprint of your own. Nice work!
Since we’re both dedicated to the cause, we think you’ll appreciate knowing exactly what we’re doing to minimize our “carbon pawprint” across our business—starting with our carbon neutral pet food options. By giving these products to Fido and Tiger at home, you’re actually achieving your own personal goal of living more simply. Together, we are making a difference… read on to learn how.
The Dawn of Carbon Neutral Pet Food
Better for pets, better for our planet
Back in 2014, we launched Canine PowerFood & Feline PowerFood. We knew they were going to be popular from the start, because we knew just how much innovation, dedication and love we’d poured into these 100% natural, grain-free, high-protein foods. But we were dreaming even bigger right from the beginning.
So we went bigger. Since January 2016, every bag of Canine & Feline PowerFood our customers have chosen for their beloved pets has been 100% carbon neutral. Carbon neutral products mean that no net carbon emissions have been added to the environment through the entire manufacturing and distribution process. Tails everywhere are wagging with approval!
How Carbon Neutral Products Work
Taking responsibility for our actions
Let’s face facts. All manufacturing creates carbon emissions as a byproduct. But socially conscious manufacturers can “equal out” the CO2 they create by tracking the emissions, then “offsetting” that amount by funding various global projects aimed at reducing equivalent (or greater) emissions into the atmosphere.
Only Natural Pet tracks all of the energy consumed by the ingredient processing, manufacturing, packaging and distribution of three of our bestselling food lines: Canine Powerfood, Feline PowerFood, Wholesome Homemade & PowerFusion. Through the end of 2017, our carbon neutral programs resulted in more than 10,000 metric tons of carbon emissions being offset. That’s like taking more than 2,000 cars off the road for a whole year!
Doing Good Where it Matters
Facilitating good around the world
All around the world, hundreds of communities are enjoying improvements to their environment as a result of carbon offset initiatives. As its global project of choice, Only Natural Pet supports a sustainability project located in the Pará region of Brazil.
Pará is home to an amazingly diverse rainforest ecosystem. But the region experiences deforestation threats from illegal logging, land speculation and cattle ranching facilitated by the expansion of unofficial roads. Fortunately, there’s still time to make a difference and reverse these trends.
Our initiative is helping to preserve a vital section of what remains of the Pará Amazon rainforest. In addition to preserving the time-honored traditions of the 80 families that live in the area, the project is helping to prevent the widespread deforestation that had been taking place. By the end of the project, these efforts will prevent more than 22 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions from being released into the atmosphere—a benefit equivalent to building 5,000 wind turbines. That’s not just a lot of hot air.
Why Stop There?
Where our pawprints are leading next
In the two-plus years since our first lines went carbon neutral, we’ve introduced two entirely new product assortments that have been carbon neutral from launch: Wholesome Homemade in October 2016 and (most recently) PowerFusion in November 2017. Whenever we roll out even more new products, you can bet we’re keeping the environment in mind.
And it doesn’t end with new products. We have to consider the impact that all the boxes being shipped to customers’ homes have on our carbon pawprint. Fortunately, there’s an answer for that as well. With our Carbon Neutral Shipping commitment, we… ah, we’ve gone on long enough. That’s a story for another time!
Sure, some of us still have snow on the ground and you can still see your breath during your morning walk with Fido, but that doesn’t mean that fleas and ticks aren’t secretly plotting an attack on your favorite furry friend.
We know that fleas and ticks pose a threat to pets year-round, but they become most active during the warmer months, starting as early as March in some areas of the United States. 2017 was predicted to be one of the worst flea seasons on record and 2018 has a similar forecast due the warmer-than-average winter most of us just experienced. So it’s time to gear up.
At Only Natural Pet, we clearly believe flea and tick control should be both highly effective and safe for you and your pets. There are multiple, natural ways to protect your pets and homes from fleas and ticks.
Parasites not welcome
The best defense is a good offense. Good overall pet health and immunity is your best bet against fleas and ticks. Like other parasites, fleas target less healthy hosts, as well as puppies and kittens with undeveloped immune systems. Diet and exercise, like interactive toys, are the foundation of pet health, so make sure your pets have the basics covered.
Flea combs are the best method to discover if fleas are present. Pay close attention to the tummy and tail areas, and drown any captured fleas in soapy water. Daily flea combing may be tedious, but it’s highly effective.
Repelling the pests
For dogs, essential oil-based, non-chemical products work very well to help keep fleas away. Sprays, wipes and shampoos with essential oils, like geraniol, not only help repel fleas, they’re also safe and feature no synthetic pesticides. Herbal Defense Oil Blend is a great repellent for dogs. You can put a drop on the collar, and dilute it into a spray to mist your dog. Only Natural Pet Herbal Defense Squeeze-On is another effective, safe and long lasting option for your dog.
For cats, EasyDefense Flea & Tick Wipes are easy to use. Oils with geraniol are safe for use with cats. The repelling power of geraniol is effective for fleas, ticks and mosquitoes and it is a great, long lasting flea repellant option.
Most of the flea population lives in your house and yard, not on your pet. Treating the environment is essential if you want to win this war. Remember to either vacuum some Only Natural Pet All-in-One Flea Remedy or an herbal flea powder into the vacuum bag to kill any fleas in the bag. Only Natural Pet All-in-One Flea Remedy can be used on carpeting, on pet bedding, on furniture and on hard floors. It can also be applied to grass to kill fleas in the yard by sprinkling the powder or applying with a hose sprayer.
We understand that using natural methods can take more effort than using chemicals and pesticides on your cat or dog. But as natural pet parents, we want our pets, our homes and our environment to be healthier! What Cat Parents Are Saying
Our Only Natural Pet online communities are the best. We truly enjoy the conversations between – and among – our Only Natural Pet people. This particular product really got our cat lover chatter going! Here are some top comments and questions:
“This is the best litter! In my fifty+ years of having cats, I’ve tried a lot of brands and types.”
“I’m currently using walnut litter, but I do frequently order from you…love and very thankful for the vitamins and homeopathic products for cats!!”
“I would like to try it, but my cat may not like the change. She’s real picky when it comes to her litter.”
Only Natural Pet Response: “Nothing like messing with a cat’s routines or preferences to ensure you get an earful from her. If you’re using a similar litter, we suggest transitioning by mixing it with your current litter 50/50 the first time. Best of luck!”
“Is there any wheat or gluten in this mix? I’ve been looking for wheat-free natural cat litter for a while!”
Only Natural Pet Response: “This product does not include wheat or any other gluten-containing grains. It’s 100% non-GMO grass seed.”
“Can I use it to reseed my lawn?”
Only Natural Pet Response: “We like your pro-recycling thinking, but no, we do not recommend that.”
Now that we’re a week into 2018 and all of the typical New Year’s fanfare has died down, we think it’s time for fresh twist on the New Year’s Resolution. Why not kill two birds (not really) and make some commitments to your pet parenting and your personal health and wellness? Read on for great ideas for resolutions for you and your pet.
#1 Get Moving
We know, we know. It’s at the top of everyone’s resolution list. But isn’t it more appealing to exercise with your dog, rather than in a gym? Commit to upping your daily walk game – but don’t limit yourself to just walking. Throw in some intervals (walk or run faster for short periods) or some games of catch or even a set of push-ups. It’s good for you, it breaks up the monotony of the walk and your dog will love time spent with you.
#2 What’s Up Doc?
Chances are, you have health screenings or doctor’s appointments you should make in the New Year. The same is true for your pet. Yearly examinations by your veterinarian are so important to good preventive care. Vet visits are also the perfect time to ask for advice, talk about nutrition, supplements or get an expert opinion on any behavioral issues.
#3 Get Out There!
Daily walks are great, but consider going a little bigger. Try hiking, trail running, snow shoeing, kayaking or any other activity that gets you and your dog outside and moving! It’s a great way to bond and the physical activity and mental health benefits are great for both of you.
#4 Primp and Polish
No one wants a stinky pet. Regular grooming — bathing, nail clipping, brushing teeth and coat – will make your pet more pleasant to be around and (bonus!) it’s healthier for your pet. Plus, all that nurturing and daily grooming is a great bonding activity for you and your pet. But pay attention – any skin and coat problems that don’t resolve with regular grooming, please see your veterinarian.
#5 All Work and No Play…
…makes pet parents very dull. More play time is a fun and positive resolution for people and pets! It’s a great stress reliever for you and who doesn’t embrace unconditional love and attention? Cats love the thrill of chasing a laser toy or catnip toys and dogs are happy with most any game, like fetch, tug and pull, hide and seek. It all works!
Lastly, it’s a New Year so don’t forget to take a moment to be thankful for all you have, especially the beautiful and loving pets who enrich your life every day.
